The notation, term by term
Dice notation is a tiny language, and these are its working parts. Everything in the table can be combined with plus and minus into one expression.

Why totals bunch in the middle
Add dice together and the totals stop being flat. With 2d6 there are 36 equally likely pairs, but only one makes 2 while six different pairs make 7, which is why 7 rules the middle of every dice game.

Keep rules bend the curve further: 4d6kh3 averages about 12.24 against 10.5 for a plain 3d6, because dropping the worst die cuts off the bottom of the distribution. Type both into the roller and watch the difference over a few rolls.

Can I combine different dice

What does kh or kl mean
Keep highest or keep lowest. 2d20kh1 rolls two twenty sided dice and keeps the higher, the usual way to write an advantage roll.
