How to use the group generator

  1. Paste names or IDs, or set 1 to N to work with numbers.
  2. Choose the number of groups or the people per group, with presets a tap away.
  3. Press Make groups for a fresh random split, then copy or export it.

How many ways a class can split

Random group assignment has a huge space to draw from, which is why fresh splits feel endlessly different. For just twelve people the counts are already large:

Split of 12 peoplePossible groupings
2 groups of 6462
3 groups of 45,775
4 groups of 315,400
6 pairs10,395

The shuffle behind this tool gives every one of those groupings the same chance, so no pairing is favoured week after week.

Even groups by construction

When you set the number of groups, the tool shuffles everyone and deals them out one at a time like cards, so group sizes can never differ by more than one person, with no manual balancing. When you set people per group instead, groups fill to exactly that size and only the last group can run short, which suits fixed capacity activities such as lab benches and minibuses.

Fair, private and repeatable enough

The list is shuffled with a Fisher Yates shuffle from the browser cryptographic source before splitting, and names never leave your device, which matters for class lists. Each press is a fresh draw, so re roll until the constraint you cannot encode, separating two rivals, say, is satisfied, then export the CSV as the record. To call individuals rather than build teams, use the classroom picker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split people into groups

Paste your names or IDs, choose whether to set the number of groups or the people per group, and the tool shuffles everyone and splits them.

Can I use numbers instead of names

Yes. Leave the list empty and set the 1 to N field, and the tool assigns the numbers 1 up to N into groups.

Does it balance the groups

When you set the number of groups it deals people out one at a time, so group sizes differ by at most one. By people per group it fills groups in turn, so the last group may be smaller.

Is the split random

Yes. The list is shuffled with the browser cryptographic random source before it is divided, so every arrangement is equally likely.

Is it free

Yes, free and with no sign up. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter leaves your device.
