A complete run of odd numbers has a total with a famous shape: the odds from 1 up to any point always sum to a perfect square. Fifty odds reach 99, and their total is 50 squared.

The 2k minus 1 sequence
Every odd number can be written as two times something minus one, which makes the odd list the natural numbering for alternating patterns: the left side of a street, every other row in a layout, or the gaps between the evens. Position n in the list starting from 1 is simply 2n minus 1, so the 40th odd number is 79 without counting through the list.
